Little Charlie was a sharecropper's son. All he knew was bad luck and hard work. His bad luck continued when his father was killed and the mean foreman, Cap'n Buck, showed up demanding money his father owed him. He demanded Little Charlie go with him on a slave hunting expedition to the North. That is where Little Charlie's education of the world really began.

This book is on the National Book Award Long List. It is a good book about the destiny of the white sharecropper which is not something you hear much about. It is also provides a good picture of the Fugitive Slave Act and the lengths people would go to to hunt down the runaway slaves. The dialect can be a little distracting at times but overall this is a book worth your time.
