Dietrich Bonhoeffer knew he wanted to be a preacher from a young age. He spent his life in pursuit of his faith. His faith was tested when Hitler came to power in Bonhoeffer's beloved Germany. Bonhoeffer watched his people fall under the spell of such evil power and had to reconcile his faith with what was happening around him. His faith led him to become a spy and work towards plots that would end the Nazi regime. While these plots were ultimately unsuccessful, Bonhoeffer never faltered in his faith and his desire for a better Germany.

This was a deceptively dense book with lots of information packed into each page. Sometimes at the detriment to the reader when the font was extremely tiny. However, it all flowed well and kept the reader interested in what was going to happen next. It did take me a bit longer than I expected to read this book. It wasn't because it was bad, but the density of the text made me a bit tired when reading. I was aware of the Valkyrie plot to kill Hitler (they made a movie about it afterall), but wasn't aware of the others. It is hard to imagine that the general population of Germany was so enthralled by Hitler, but they were. It is a sad part of the history of humanity, but it is good to know that there were people against Hitler from the beginning.
