Several sources list this book as a Western, or Classic Western, I might be more inclined to call it a frontier novel, but I guess the Old West was the frontier. The novel is basically an hommage to frontier women to their strength, their industry, and spirit. The story is comprised of multiple vignettes, told from the nostalgic perspective of Jim Burden. Jim has come to live with his grandparents and meets Antonia and her immigrant family who've just purchased land close to his family.

I chose this audio-book because the plot seemed very similar to hometown story of Coach Pete Adkins and his Jefferson City Jays football team. I lived through much of this man's famous winning streak, was in high school when part of it ended. My husband played for Coach Pete. Many of the stories I heard during this tribute and I'm sure much of this will be similar to the tributes our players will give in the end. Right or wrong, football coaches play a very important part of the lives of young men - some good, some bad, but a fact of life.
This was another good take on life on a soap opera. Lots of tongue in cheek and characters who are all looking for a step up to brighter stardom. Of course, the romance adds to the story and will continue with "daughter" three in the next book.
