Program Description

Description

Based on true events, this film is based on the exploits of Han van Meegeren, a Dutch folk hero and notorious art forger who swindled millions of dollars from the Nazis by selling them "original" masterpieces. After the war, he was accused of collaboration, which would result in a death sentence. Joseph Piller, a Dutch resistance fighter, is working for the Allies to repatriate stolen artworks, and comes upon a Vermeer sold to Hermann Goering and the accusations against Van Meegeren. The film is both a detective story and a courtroom drama, highlighting the conflicts between commerce and culture and the morality of wartime survival actions.
