Description
While light was harnessed in the form of lasers in the 1960s, scientists have been racing to catch up with science fiction for the past 60 years. Popular franchises such as Star Wars and Star Trek depict lasers with devastating properties, but in most cases these lasers are complete works of fiction. Dr. Tim Quincy, assistant professor of chemistry, will examine why some of these systems are not possible with our current scientific understanding. He will also look at some of the commercial uses of light and lasers that are inspired by science fiction and are common today.
