Description
The Old Munichberg Association of Jefferson City will be celebrating their 25th anniversary with a program featuring a brief history of the early years on the South Side of Jefferson City primarily inhabited by German immigrants beginning in the late 1840s. The German Evangelical Church (now Central Church) served as the anchor of the community which became known as "Munichberg". It was from the membership and pastoral leadership of Central Church that interest in preserving the German heritage of the South Side began in the late 1990s. By the year 2000, the discussion lead to the formation of a formalized organization known as the Old Munichberg Association. The first half of the program will feature this discussion.
The second half of the program will feature the history of the sister city partnership with the City of Jefferson and Munichberg, Germany. Over the past 25 years, several delegations from Munichberg have come to Jefferson City during the time of the "Oktoberfest" celebration in the fall. And likewise, several delegations from Jefferson City have visited Munichberg, Germany, even as recently as this past May. This has been a very fulfilling partnership over the years and will be discussed by our former mayor John Landwehr.
