Arts & Crafts Aplenty at MRRL

Arts & Crafts Aplenty at MRRL

Are you in need of a creative outlet? At the Missouri River Regional Library, we have all the tools for inspiration, instruction, and creation to bring out the artistic sides of our patrons.

Inspiration: Inspiration starts at our catalogs. Whether it is flipping through the collection handbook from the Nelson-Akins Museum of Art in our reference section or learning about art from bygone eras in our nonfiction section, the library catalog is the perfect space for creative exploration. Outside of books, nourish your innovation with our collection of CDs. The Missouri River Regional Library carries a variety of genres for all ages: soundtracks, hip-hop, bluegrass and more. Another space for inspiration is the Art Gallery on the second floor of the Cole county location. Filled with temporary exhibits from local artists, the gallery showcases the best mid-Missouri has to offer. For each exhibit, there is often a reception, where patrons can meet the artist(s) alongside their art. The next reception for our current exhibit, “Passions of Painting,” will take place on Sunday, September 21st from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Instruction: Alongside the inspirational pieces in our catalog, the library offers a variety of books and media providing the ‘how-tos’ of craft creation. Need a handbook for homemade housewares? Preparation for pottery? Missouri River Regional Library has it all. You can learn to be your own version of Bob Ross by visiting our Cole county or Osage county locations to learn more, or searching online with our virtual catalog

Creation: Our Jefferson City location hosts a 3-D Printer, which makes three-dimensional objects in plastic using a design that is uploaded from a digital computer file. With the internet full of inspiration, submitting for a 3-D printed creation has never been easier. Before to also check out our variety of crafting events available for all ages. Kids events include everything from turning recycled masterpieces to friendship bracelets. Teen events include monthly ‘Art Club’ sessions, practical arts instructions like sewing and embroidery, and ‘Crafting for a Cause’ alongside our adult patrons. Speaking of adults, our adult events include monthly ‘Junk Journal’ events, ‘Knitting and Crocheting’ at our Cole county location and ‘Happy Hookers’ in Osage county, and guided ‘Paint Parties’ for those who need a little extra guidance.
