Melly is always in her best friend Olivia's shadow. She lets Olivia take the lead in most things and is just happy to follow along. That is how she ends up at Camp Rockaway. Melly plays the drums and Olivia the bass and they assume they will be paired together for camp. They are in the same cabin, but get put in different bands. Olivia is soon enamored with the lead singer of her band and ditching Melly. Melly is in a band that doesn't seem to fit together musically but she does enjoy getting to know singer Adeline. Since Olivia is off with Noel so much Melly and Adeline become a lot closer and realize that they might have more than friendly feelings for each other. When Olivia and Noel break up and she suddenly has time for Melly again things really come to a head. Melly has to decide who is more important.

I loved this story. It was a nice first love at camp story and just happened to involve two girls. I thought it was pretty realistically portrayed and just sweet. I also thought the Olivia Melly drama was perfect. How many girls leave their friends behind when they have the attention of a cute boy and then want the friends back when the boy ends up on the outs. It is a good lesson for girls that friends are more important and more long-lasting that fleeting boyfriends. I did think Melly's parents were pretty awful in a way. They tell Melly they are getting a divorce the day before she leaves for camp so she has to deal with it on her own. It made it easier for them but it was a horrible thing to do to their daughter.
