Feeling Generous? What to Do with Those Used Books (and Where to Find More)

Feeling Generous? What to Do with Those Used Books (and Where to Find More)

(updated 3/22/22)

Last fall the front of the library had a strange sign: We are not currently accepting donations.

When we recently had our March Used Book Sale (and the pop-up sales we held in the Art Gallery) it has allowed us to once again take donations. Even then, we do not take everything. Encyclopedias, textbooks, magazines, VHS tapes (except for Disney movies in the original cases) are some of the items that we say "No thanks" to.

Our Osage County branch in Linn, Mo. will be glad to take your donations of not only books, but also DVDs, CDs, games, and puzzles (897-2951).

So where can you donate those items our library does not accept? We checked other locations when we were unable to accept them. Here's what we found:

  • Last fall, neither the Salvation Army nor Daniel Boone Regional Library were accepting donations. Salvation Army is accepting once again (635-1463).
  • Close to the main branch is First United Methodist Church next to us at 201 Monroe St (635-6886). Enter through the entrance on Capitol Avenue.
  • Another location is the Goodwill Retail Store on S. Ten Mile Drive (635-6714). Books taken there will be sold in stores and online through Amazon
  • Divinity Religious Gift Shop, located at 320 Jefferson Street (636-5470), accepts religious books and some secular books. (Call ahead if you have questions.)
  • Finally, Retold Tales Used Books in the Summit Plaza Shopping Center in Holts Summit (896-0241) also takes donations.

And if you are looking for books to purchase from the library between sales, here are two suggestions:

  • The Jefferson City Branch always has a wire rack of paperback books for sale for only a quarter each, near the self-checkout station.
  • And there is a marvelous room in the back of the Osage Branch: the Friends of the Osage County Library (FOCL) room full of books, electronic media, puzzles, and games.  On the first Saturday of each month (9:00-12:30), FOCL members can fill a FOCL-supplied bag for $10. And on the third Saturday (9:00-12:30), the public can shop the FOCL Room with special monthly promotions. (Look here for how to join FOCL.)

Meanwhile, both branches have (FREE!) books, magazines, electronic media and games, as well as thousands of downloadable books, magazines, audiobooks, and movies through the Hoopla, Libby, and Kanopy apps, and eBooks collection.
