Book Sale Week!

It's book sale week and the staff and volunteers of the library and ABLE are hopping. The staff of Amerigo Caldwell Moving Company are donating both trucks and the time of their movers to help us haul the thousands of boxes of books we've collected out to the sale site. That process is getting ready to start now, then tomorrow will be setting up and getting all those books displayed and on Wednesday the sale begins!!

Podcast with Bridget Bufford

We have the podcast interview with author Bridget Bufford up now on our Podcast blog. Check it out and hear a Pushcart nominated author speak with Claudia about her book and her influences in her writing.

Library Booksale - Coming Soon!

The yearly event is almost at hand! March 14th at 4pm, the doors will open and you will get a chance to get your hands on some cheap, gently pre-owned books, games, toys and more! This booksale benefits both the library and the Jefferson City ABLE (Adult Basic and Literacy Education) groups. More information (including directions to the sale location in St. Martins) can be found at http://www.mrrl.org/content/book-sale.

Library programs for home schoolers

The JCSHG (Jefferson City Secular Homeschooling Group) blogged about one of the library's programs aimed at homeschooling families last week. They included pictures of the kids carving soap, making a collage and - with a cameo from the library's own Eric - working on digital portrait photography (among many other things). The post shows the 50 or so kids who came to the library and worked on crafts and other fun activites in the Art Gallery in the library.

Resources for your iPad

Did you get a new iPad for Christmas? Wondering what you should be putting on it? Definitely go for the Overdrive application so that you can access our ebooks and audiobooks from your iPad. Another great application is Access My Library, which gives you access to many of MRRL's databases of journal, magazine and newspaper articles right from your iPad!

A Day At The Library

Today, the library opens at 9am and, first thing, there is a Yoga class in the Art Gallery from 9-10am. At 3:30pm in the afternoon, we have a teen Anime Club meeting until 5:30 - teens can drop in, chat with other Anime fans, eat some popcorn and watch some Anime during this time. After that, they are encouraged to join Courtney, our Teen Librarian, in a craft time program where they can make gifts, decorations and more from 6-8pm.

Flag at Half-Staff today

From the Governor's office:
Gov. Jay Nixon has ordered that the flags of the United States and the State of Missouri at all state government buildings statewide be flown at half-staff on Wednesday (Dec. 14) in honor of Frederick "Fred" Guthrie Jr., a trooper with the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Trooper Guthrie, along with his K-9 partner, Reed, died in the line of duty on Aug. 1 while serving the citizens of Missouri while on flood duty in Holt County.

Busy Weekend at MRRL

Most of our weekends are busy - full of activities and fun stuff for the whole family to enjoy - and this weekend is no exception. We have a film for the adults (a British domestic drama from 1937) on Friday night at 7pm, a family crafting morning making sock puppets with the Children's department staff on Saturday morning at 10am and a Teen After Hours party at the library on Saturday night from 6-9pm. No matter what your age - we have something fun for you to do this weekend!

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Don't forget that the library will be closed on Thursday and Friday of this week, but will reopen at 9am on Saturday!
