Teen Volunteers Wanted!
need community service hours?
want to work with young children for the summer?
want a free t-shirt and a letter of recommendation?
Try the Reading Buddies Program at MRRL
The Reading Buddies Program is a program that pairs teen mentors with young struggling readers for eight weeks during the summer. Mentors will encourage students to improve or maintain their reading skills throughout the summer. They will also assist with craft projects and play literacy games with their buddies each session.
The library is currently recruiting teen volunteers from local middle and high schools in Jefferson City and the surrounding area. Teen volunteers must be between 12 and 18 years old and enjoy working with children. Interested teens will be interviewed and, if chosen, will attend training to prepare for the program.
The Reading Buddies Program is an eight week program that runs during the months of June and July. Volunteers will attend atleast one weekly session during each of those weeks. Sessions are on Tuesday evening and Wednesday afternoon.
The teens work with little buddies in kindergarten through 2nd grade. These children are struggling readers who are attending summer school through the Jefferson City Public Schools. We will be sending out applications to all students who qualify for the program in the first couple of weeks of May. The program is filled on a first come first serve basis. We do have a limited number of places in the program. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
Want to be a Little Buddy?
The program is open to kindergarten through second grade students who are attending summer school in Jefferson City. Simply fill out the application and return it by Saturday, May 18, 2013. You will meet at the library once a week to read with your Big Buddy and do craft projects. There are two sessions available: Wednesday afternoons and Tuesday evenings.
