Artist's Statement:

Although I originally planned to become an artist, somewhere along the way I decided to become a physician instead. I took a year off after my third year in medical school to study overseas, armed with a camera to document the experiences with people in New Zealand, New Guinea, Kenya and Denmark. As a result,
the camera provided me with an outlet for
artistic expression.

Then Adobe Photoshop arrived. At a conference in the late 1980s, I was amazed by the power of digital tools and began to read every training manual I could find on the subject. The only problem was that most people were more interested in the technology than the art. I wanted to explore not only the process of creating art with digital tools, but also classic ways of understanding and creating art. In the late 1990s, I cut back a bit on medicine to take formal art classes at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Most of these images are based on my 35mm photographs. Recently I abandoned film and now capture the images with a digital camera. Also in the show are some oil paintings of the Prairie Garden Trust near my home.
