Biography:James Crow is a native Missourian, born and raised in St. Louis. He attended Iowa State University at Ames, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. In 1995, he received a Master of Fine Arts in Drawing and Printmaking from the University of Missouri at Columbia. Crow lives with his wife and older son in Cooper Hill, a small town east of Jefferson City, which they have called home for 23 years. The Crow"s other son is a senior at Rhode Island School of Design at Providence. Crow is on the faculty of East Central College in Union, where he teaches Drawing, Painting, Printmaking and Design. Before that, he had a distinguished career at Linn High School, where he taught for 16 years. Crow"s work has been shown and won awards throughout Missouri and the Midwest. He has had solo and joint exhibitions in Jefferson City, Columbia and Fulton.
Artist"s Statement:Mr. Crow will be exhibiting Pastels, Oils and Prints, believing that working simultaneously in different media has a mutually beneficial effect to those different approaches to making art. Although he will be showing some still lifes, the subject matter is primarily landscapes done in the mid-Missouri area, along with imagery inspired by a trip to the American West. Mr. Crow works in a representational style, creating a sense of visual space, and modeling forms through the subtle use of hue and value, giving vitality to the color of light falling across objects as well as mystery to the shadows cast by them. "When I make art it"s because something that I see or hear strikes a chord deep inside, gives me a feeling that I really can"t put into words. It"s almost that the thing that strikes me is painful in its beauty or impact. You feel compelled to somehow extend that moment-make it last longer and by doing so to present your own interpretation of it."
